A downloadable game for Android

Syllablocks is an education tool for assisting in teaching vocabulary. It takes the form of a puzzle game where the player must slide blocks to arrange the syllables into the correct order to reveal the hidden word. The game is designed to be played on an Android tablet and was made in Unity.

How the game works

At the beginning of each puzzle, a word is chosen at random from a list of vocabulary. The sliding block puzzle grid is then generated and the syllables of the chosen word are scattered amongst the blocks. The chosen word is read aloud to the player at the beginning of the puzzle and can be repeated at any time by clicking the speaker icon. The player must arrange the syllables in the correct order before the timer runs out. Upon successfully completing the puzzle, the player is shown the chosen word along with its definition, synonyms and an example of it being used in a sentence.

Vocabulary editor

The game has an editor where the user can add to and edit the list of vocabulary the game uses to generate the puzzles. As well as adding their own vocabulary directly in the editor, the user can also import vocabulary from a CSV spreadsheet.

Accessibility

The majority of text in the game uses the OpenDyslexic font, which has been specifically designed to be more easily readable for people with dyslexia. The game also has the option of displaying subtitles for when the chosen word is spoken aloud and turning off the timer for an easier experience.
